Photography prompt 3
"My theory of composition? Simple: do not release the shutter until everything in the viewfinder feels just right." Ernst Haas
Shutter Speed
This month we are going to look at our shutter speed. For those of us using a camera with some manul settings, you can set the shutter speed to "S" for shutter speed priority. this allows you to alter your shutter speed and your camera will set the aperture setting for you.
Our shutter speed is important when photograhing in low light conditions and when photographing motion shots.
A faster shutter speed will freeze action whereas a slower shutter speed can create a blurred effect (or can just be downright blurry.) When you set your shutter speed on your camera, you’ll see numbers like 60, 120, 250, 1000 and so on. These actually represent 1/60th of a second, 1/120th of a second and so on. So the higher the bottom number on the fraction, the faster the shutter speed. The smaller the number, the slower the shutter speed. You will also see shutter speeds for seconds, indicated by inch marks ("). For example, if the display says 1"5, that indicates a shutter speed of 1½ seconds. If the display says 30", the shutter will be open for 30 seconds.
A general rule of thumb is not to set your shutter speed less than 1/60 when taking a photo without a tripod. A shutter speed less than this, will cause camera shake and you should use your tripod, or a firm static surface, ie a wall, or table.
Shutter Challenge (taken from 2 peas)

1. Find your kitchen sink (that shouldn’t be too hard.)

2. Now locate an object that is going to obstruct the water flowing from the faucet. Basically, you want something that will interrupt the flow of water, causing the water to "splash" around it (similar to what a child’s boots do when tromping through a rain puddle.)

3. Set your shutter speed to 1/80th of a second (indicated by the number 80.) Turn on the water and take the picture.

4. Now set your shutter really high (around 1/1000 of a second or higher) and take the photo again.See the detail in the second photo of the water drops?
Have fun playing :)

This was taken last year on our first holiday together.

We met 14th September 2006. My best friend introduced us over MySpace (of all places) we imediatly clicked and went out on a date after a few days chatting on MSN and the phone. Would like to add I have never met anyone off the internet before so this was little out of character for me. I guess it was because I was planning on moving to Canada in Jan 07 so thought what the hell will go on a few dates and have some fun. Boy! It was love at first sight for me when we met for our first date =) It was 3 days before my birthday, I get the train to Edinburgh to meet him for dinner, met him at the train station to find he had me a birthday present! thought that was very sweet of him. We had a few drinks before dinner, then had a lovely dinner and chatted all night until it was time for me to go home! had to admit i didnt want to get on the train home, didn't want that night to end as we just got on so well.

Well it didn't end, a year later we got engaged and it still like when we first met =) so more to come!

Photography prompt 1

We have already taken 14 brilliant photos documenting your last 14 days. This week look at taking photos from a different angle/perspective. Try taking photos from above, from below. Take a closer look and start to zoom in on your subject.

If you are working with a digital camera try playing with depth of field. Here's a pratical for you to try.

Go grab a vase of flowers, a plant, coffee cup and place on a table. Grab your manul if you have never moved from auto!!

1. Place your camera onto apperture priority "A" or "TV". This allows you to change the F/stop apperture setting and your camera will sort the shutter speed for you

2. Pop your ISO onto 100 - 250 depending on your light situation.100 being outside and good lighting, 250 for inside with some natural light

3. Now move your fstop to the lowest number on your camera, this could be anything between 1.4 - 3.5. Focus on your subject, take your photo

4. Now move the fstop to 5.6 , snap. Next move to fstop 11, snap

5. Can you see a difference? Your first photo shows the subject in clear focus with a blurry background. The last photo shows all the area in clear focus!

Monday 14 January 2008

Day 14

"Attempt the impossible in order to improve your work.”

Savor life's tiny delights---a crackling fire, a glorious sunset, a hug from a child, a walk with a friend, a cup of soup, a kiss behind the ear.

What little thing brings comfort to your day?

What do your hands say about you. Take note

Hands -never really took much notice of my hands until now. For all I am only 26 years old my hands to me look really old - i see the defined lines on my palms and around my knuckles. I have just noticed after scrutinizing them for this post that have a few freckles on them! How the heck did they get there =)

Now i have an engagement ring to show off I am conscious about my hands looking nice when I am work all day, though i never polish my nails as typing all day makes it chip off lol

"Life is too short and too amazing to spend time worring about imperfection "

Ali Edwards

Grab your camera and click, don't worry about the imperfections! Use todays quote for both your photo and journaling prompt.

Took this photo yesterday when I was feeling especially sorry for myself and coughing and spluttering all over the place.

Even when I am ill, pasty white and have no make-up on my fiancé still finds me perfect in every way and doesn't see the imperfections that I see in myself and everyday life.

Since meeting him I realise that life is indeed too short to worry about the imperfections!

365 Days of Fee

Just discovered this challange.

Gotta love being ill - have spent the last few days creating blogs and mucking about in the internet looking for things to do.

This is going to be a hard challenge for me to do, as I'm not a fan of having my photo taken as such, and also I'm terrible at seeing things through due to other commitments etc.

So this is going to be a real challange for me to keep up! My little digital camera has packed in so I will have to resort to using my mobile phone(s) until I can afford to get a new one.
